Last Friday the Supreme Court of the United States decided in a unanimous decision to erase protest free buffer zones around abortion clinics.
In addition, today they sided with Hobby Lobby in the matter of whether or not Christian for profit corporations have to comply with the ACA in the matter of contraceptives and insurance. (I won’t even get into the fact that this seems to only be about Christianity, other people are doing that)
Supreme Court Sides With Hobby Lobby On Contraception Mandate
The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby that employers with religious objections can opt out of providing contraception coverage under Obamacare. The ruling deals with only a small provision of Obamacare and will not take down the entire law, but it amounts to a huge black eye for Obamacare and its backers. The justices have given Obamacare opponents their most significant political victory against the health care law, reinforcing their argument that the law and President Barack Obama are encroaching on Americans’ freedoms (Haberkorn and Gerstein).
THIS IS BULLSHIT.
Women’s rights are being stripped from them rather speedily. First, our right to safety when getting healthcare is encroached upon, trumped by free speech. I can entirely see why it was a unanimous decision on the abortion buffer issue – IF you don’t consider the safety and access angles.
When I was in college the Right to Life group at my university would camp outside the Planned Parenthood three blocks away and pray the rosary. They would crowd up the sidewalk so it was nearly impossible for people to walk down it, and it was absolutely impossible for me.
Using my white cane, I had to work very hard to not hit any of the protestors with my cane. You know what I really don’t want? To get arrested for assault and battery on my way to a pap smear. Protestors aren’t just dangerous, but they restrict access to clinics for people with disabilities. Protestors are often obstructions on the sidewalk, and without that buffer zone, it becomes much easier to stop people from entering. Not to mention that the anti-abortion groups have already decided to re-educate their protestors in order to “help” people.
I can’t even tell you how afraid I am for what can happen when people who act as though they are counselors can stand right at the door to a Planned Parenthood and talk to a woman who is trying to have an abortion.
And guess what? This has become even more complicated, because Planned Parenthood is the only place that I know of where you can get affordable contraceptives and STI tests. Now that women who work at corporations run by Christians won’t necessarily be able to get the healthcare they need, more people will be reliant upon reasonably priced outside care to prevent pregnancy.
Just so we’re clear, that means more people stopping you from trying to get your birth control, more people harassing you on your way to a pap smear, more people harassing you when you think that you might have HIV.
Fuck that.
Just fuck it. Because you know what? We should have better reasoning behind this. We should not be forced to put up with religious fervor on our way to the doctor. This is a country where “freedom” is considered a paramount value, and yet…. Well, let’s just put it this way. It feels more and more like religious freedom trumps women’s freedom. The freedom of ease trumps the rights of disabled Americans. Freedom is about the loudest, angriest, and most powerful denominations of our country.
I am tired of my rights not mattering. I am tired of people assuming that just because one is disabled, one doesn’t need access to healthcare, I am tired of people deciding that they know what is best for another person’s body.
My body. My choice. No one else. My husband has a right to have a dialogue with me about my care, but he doesn’t have the right to make choices for me, and you know what? That definitely means that total strangers don’t get to make that choice either.
GET OUT OF MY HEALTHCARE. NOW.
